Sands and McDougall directories online

The State Library of Victoria have digitized a series of Sands & McDougall directories.  This is wonderful news for people researching the history of their family or their home.  One in every five directories, dating from 1860 to 1974, are available online.

The directories have three main sections - an alphabetical listing of surnames; a house by house, street by street listing within each suburb, and a trades and professions alphabetical listing. There are other smaller lists which include government departments, societies, churches and municipalities.

The directories are useful researching the history of a house, and the street listings can be used in conjunction with the rate books.
